Staycation: An Australian Road Trip

As we're firmly on the home straight towards 2016, it's time to start thinking about what next year has in store for you. For us, plans for the New Year always involve a resolve to eat more healthily, hit the gym and travel the world. Unfortunately another year passes and dreams of travelling the world never quite pan out as we'd hoped.

So for 2016, we're going to start early: make it your most adventurous year yet and start planning now. Whether you dream of spending 10 days, 2 weeks or even 2 months discovering Asia, the Americas or Europe, why not kick off proceedings with a short summer staycation in Australia? After all, there's plenty to explore at home; with a Britz campervan you've got the freedom to unearth the culture and history of this fantastic country.

If you're yearning for a trip that offers a bit of beach time, make it a real summer holiday and spend a few days discovering brilliantly tropical Queensland. Soak up the rays all the way up the Sunshine Coast, starting in Brisbane and ending in Cairns where you can get to grips with one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the magnificent Great Barrier Reef. From there, journey up to Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation on the Great Tropical Drive, stopping at Palm Cove, Four Mile Beach and the Daintree, the world's oldest living tropical rainforest, before reaching the historic town of Cooktown.

Alternatively you could head west from Cairns and make your way over to Broome in Western Australia, once the pearling capital of the world. Go via Undara Volcanic Park, one of Australia's greatest geological wonders and Purnululu National Park, which has been inscribed on the World Heritage List since 2003. Once you've reached Broome, head straight for the famous 22 kms-long Cable Beach.

As foodies nationwide will know, Western Australia is the place to be. Starting in Perth, make your way down to Margaret River and back up again, taking a few days out at each stop to indulge in some of the finest food and wine in the world; seriously, along the Margaret River you've got over 100 wineries to choose from….the only question is where to start!

For a holiday that is more GO, GO, GO than leisurely lunches at wineries try the drive from Perth to Kalbarri, aka the Indian Ocean Drive. Start in the windsurfing and sandboarding town of Lancelin and head through Jurien Bay (adrenaline junkies can skydive here), the colonial town of Geraldton and the dramatic coastal town of Kalbarri.

An inherently Australian holiday surely involves a visit to Ayers Rock- or Uluru- right? The Northern Territory is known for being the home of the majority of Australia's massive, dramatic desertscape. The Red Centre road trip showcases the best of the Australian Outback. Starting in Alice Springs (a tourist spot in itself- Priscilla Queen of the Desert, anyone?), enjoy a hot air balloon ride with Outback Ballooning before heading to Uluru via Glen Helen and Mt Connor. This landmark is of huge cultural importance to the indigenous peoples of Australia and there are plenty of educational experiences for people to learn more about Aboriginal history. Aside from this, there are a whole host of adventures to get involved in in Uluru: try quad-biking across the sand dunes, camel riding and watching the sunset over the rocks – a sensational sight.

Down in South Australia, there are plenty of driving routes that allow you to discover the wildlife, beaches, arts and character that this part of the country has to offer. Sydney to Adelaide takes you through the beautiful Murray River region as well as famed wineries, Barossa and Clare Valley. Adelaide to Darwin is truly an 'outback' experience, full of rich Aboriginal history, breathtaking scenery and amazing wildlife. On this journey, stop by in Coober Pedy where the opal was discovered in 1915- there's even the opportunity to try noodling (the process of mining opals, for those of you that don't know!) in the town.
